Avon Vale Tennis and Croquet Club

Avon Vale Tennis and Croquet Club is is a small, friendly club situated in the village of Avonwick in the heart of Devonshire’s beautiful South Hams. Originally founded as an archery club in 1859. The club moved to its present site in 1870. Nine years later, Avon Vale held their first tennis tournament.

 

The club is older than Wimbledon and believe that the club is the third oldest tennis club in the world still playing on its original courts. Today the club has a thriving programme of tennis, social events and coaching as well as Croquet.

 

Social Play

During the summer Club sessions are held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and on Wednesday evenings. The weekend sessions are usually followed by tea, cakes and biscuits! Visitors are welcome for a small fee. However, they can only play up to three times in a season before having to join. In addition, ladies tennis sessions also take place on Thursday mornings.

 

Coaching

Tim Brealey, the club’s coach is an LTA Level 4 Senior Performance Coach with extensive experience. He offers adult beginner group coaching session as well as junior sessions. Tim also provides individual coaching for those who want improve their technique.

 

Competitive Tennis

There is a range of competitive tennis available, including one-day and open club tournaments. The club also competes with several teams in the South Devon Summer Tennis League.

 

Membership

Avon Vale Tennis and Croquet Club offers very affordable membership, with a range of options available.

In addition to a superb range of tennis, the club also hosts a number of social events throughout the year.
